Meet A.G.R. Anastase – Rwanda

NOMINATED FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN SPORTS AND OUTSTANDING

ACHIEVEMENT IN MEDIA

I’m a 23 year old young man from Rwanda and a proud African. I’m a

master’s degree student in Architecture, an avid athlete and a

journalism intern at China Investment Magazine.

When I first came to china, I was 18 years old and fresh out of high

school. I immediately started learning Mandarin at Beijing Institute

of Technology, to break the language barrier I encountered when I got

here. Four months later, I was awarded a Bachelor’s degree scholarship

at North China University of Technology in Architecture Engineering.

However, I never stopped cultivating my Chinese language skills.

As a young Rwandan in a foreign country, I yearned to represent my

culture, country and my continent. The desire to achieve that goal set

me on a path that has literally shaped me into the person I am today.

My passion for Africa and sports played a huge role in my journey.

When I started my undergraduate studies, international students

weren’t involved in any sport activities and weren’t allowed to join

Chinese student’s team. So, I founded the first ever NCUT

international students Athletics team and Basketball team in 2013.

At around the same time, the Rwandan Students Community in Beijing

trusted and elected me to become the president of our association. I

was honored, humbled and my desire to represent my African heritage

grew even more. The new responsibility that was given to me afforded

me the opportunity to meet various likeminded young Africans and we

even started to have football and basketball friendly matches to keep

up the African relation spirit.

Sports are fairly universal and linking them with personal cultural

heritage can be rather challenging. That is why, I started training as

high jumper which is similar to a traditional forgotten sport in

Rwanda called “Urukiramende”. I was very surprised to hear from my

coach that I actually had quite a knack for it! Later on, both my

father and grandfather told me that they were pretty good at

“Urukiramende”, my grandfather had even performed it at the king’s

court in his youth. That made me strive to break pre-existing records.

So, what are my achievements in Sports?

i. Founding the international NCUT athletics and basketball team 2013

ii. Reigning Champion in high jump 4 times in a row at NCUT

iii. I’m a part of the current relay(4x100m, 4x400m) record holder

team (all African team)

iv. Equaling the standing NCUT high jump record dating back to 1994.

v. Qualified to represent NCUT in Beijing all universities sports

meeting in the High jump category-2015

vi. Awarded 8th place certificate in Beijing all universities sports

meeting in the High jump 2016 and only African to qualify for the

Beijing City Level.

2015”, Beijing Foreigners basketball games.

viii. Captain of NCUT Thunders, quarter finalist in the “NIULANSHAN

Cup 2016”, Beijing Foreigners basketball games.

And Why Journalism?

After living in Beijing for four years and driven by the willingness

to spread the true African image which to this day remains a mystery

to many Chinese and the eagerness to tell the wonderful stories of our

great continent, I started my journey into journalism. Where, through

Hi! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting fed up of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
